with David Ohton, San Diego State University Strength and Conditioning Director
Learn how David Ohton teaches the San Diego State baseball team speed, flexibility, and conditioning. After complete discussion and demonstration of the Aztec warm up and flexibility drills, Ohton shares the endurance building running program they use. The program that is used at San Diego State starts with a cardio program, then works into an intermediate program, competition period, and ends with the "showtime" period. Each of these steps will cover between 2-3 weeks and build each athlete's endurance, speed, and running form. This will gradually work your athletes into top shape. Finally, Ohton diagrams the agility drills that he uses to help each athlete reach their potential. Over 20 different baseball-specific agility drills are shown. The flexibility program, conditioning program, and agility drills are ideal for a team setting or for individual player workouts.
with Eric Valenzuela, University of San Diego Pitching Coach
In 2007 Valenzuela's pitchers ranked in the top 5 in the nation in strikeouts per nine innings (3rd - 9.5), walks allowed per nine innings (3rd - 2.51), ERA (4th - 3.42) and hits allowed per nine innings (5th - 8.22). In addition, two of Valenzuela's pitchers, Josh Romanski and Biran Matusz, were named to Team USA for the Summer of 2007.
The components of Coach Valenzuela's effective long toss and arm conditioning program feature stick drills for mechanics, tube exercises, leg work, leg stretches, agility work and a throwing program. Using elastic tubing, players prepare for practice by demonstrating six stretching exercises. Running, individual stretching and agility exercises are other important parts of practice preparation. Valenzuela goes through his top eight individual stretches and seven agility exercises for you to incorporate into your practice. The first step in the throwing program is the Free Throw Tosses drill with a four-seam grip. Chest to chest, three position, walking into throws (40-60 feet), long toss with arc (80-90 feet), fastball/change-up catch (90 feet), working into 60 feet and feel pens from the mound (70%) comprise the drills that make up the long toss program. Six stick drill mechanics help players maintain fundamentals and proper throwing mechanics. This is the same program that, in 2007, helped propel the San Diego staff to the 7th best earned run average in the nation (3.37) while rising to 16th in the country for strikeouts per nine innings.

with Matt Walbeck, Altoona Curve (AA) Manager (Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate); Baseball America's 2007 Minor League Manager of the Year, 2007 Eastern League Manager of the Year; former Erie SeaWolves (AA) manager (Detroit Tigers affiliate and West Michigan Whitecaps Manager; 2X Midwest League Champions (Class A)
Coach Walbeck presents his ideas for developing the necessary strength to be a successful baseball player. 'Training with a purpose' is crucial for maximum strength. The physio ball is a valuable exercise tool for baseball. The ball is used for crunches, which strengthens the stomach, gluts and back muscles. The hamstring exercise works on balance and stabilization. Another exercise that strengthens the lower back and gluts is the "Superman" drill. The simple foam roller can be used to stretch the IT band in your leg. By rolling your thigh over the roller, your knees, back and arm will benefit. The spin stretch is executed by using the foam roller also. Balance is enhanced by working with the Erickson balance pad. Dumbbell exercises are shown to strengthen shoulders, arms and biceps. These exercises can help any player with his throwing ability. Leg weights, rubber tubing and medicine ball exercises can be incorporated into this workout routine. Other important stretches are the hip flexor, glut stretch, groin stretch, sleeper stretch and hamstring stretch. The skill of running, both distance and sprint work, is necessary for all baseball players. Baseball players can increase their talent level by properly working with this stretch program by major-league veteran Matt Walbeck.
